Atanásio Cosme Nyusi, um cativante contador de histórias e um lendário dançarino de Mapiko, leva-nos numa viagem visualmente dramática que cruza o passado colonial de Moçambique e o presente do país. Utilizando a música e o corpo como memória, revela a fealdade da guerra através da beleza da dança e da poesia.

Atanásio Cosme Nyusi, a captivating storyteller and legendary Mapiko dancer, takes us on a visually dramatic journey that spans Mozambique’s colonial past and the country’s present. Using music and the body as a form of memory, he reveals the ugliness of war through the beauty of dance and poetry.

Sara Gouveia

Sara Gouveia é realizadora e artista interdisciplinar. Os seus filmes distinguem-se por uma forte estética visual e pela exploração da fronteira entre a ficção e a realidade.

A sua primeira longa-metragem documental, A Dança das Máscaras (The Sound of Masks), estreou-se mundialmente no IDFA, em 2018. O filme foi exibido em diversos festivais internacionais e distinguido com o prémio de Melhor Longa-Metragem Documental no Plateau International Film Festival (2019), o SAFTA Golden Horn para Melhor Direção de Fotografia e os prémios de Melhor Longa-Metragem Internacional e Melhor Realização na 7.ª edição do Brasil Festival Internacional de Cinema.

Sara Gouveia is a filmmaker and interdisciplinary artist. Her films are characterised by a strong visual aesthetic and an exploration of the boundary between fiction and reality.

Her first feature-length documentary, A Dança das Máscaras (The Sound of Masks), had its world premiere at IDFA in 2018. The film was screened at various international festivals and won the award for Best Documentary Feature at the Plateau International Film Festival (2019), the SAFTA Golden Horn for Best Cinematography, and the awards for Best International Feature Film and Best Director at the 7th edition of the Brasil International Film Festival.

Atanásio Cosme Nhussi

Atanásio Cosme Nyusi (1962–2022) foi bailarino, coreógrafo e mestre de dança tradicional. Reconhecido como um dos mais importantes intérpretes da dança Mapiko, dedicou a sua vida à preservação e transmissão do património performativo moçambicano.

Ingressou na Companhia Nacional de Canto e Dança de Moçambique em 1982, onde rapidamente se distinguiu pela excelência artística, tornando-se um dos seus mais destacados bailarinos. Ao longo da sua carreira, desempenhou também um papel fundamental como professor e mentor de novas gerações de artistas. Através do seu trabalho como intérprete, coreógrafo e contador de histórias, Atanásio Cosme Nhussi fez da dança um espaço de memória, identidade e resistência, contribuindo de forma decisiva para a valorização das tradições culturais de Moçambique.

Atanásio Cosme Nhussi (1962–2022) was a dancer, choreographer and master of traditional dance. Recognised as one of the most important performers of Mapiko dance, he dedicated his life to the preservation and transmission of Mozambique’s performing arts heritage.

He joined the National Song and Dance Company of Mozambique in 1982, where he quickly distinguished himself through his artistic excellence, becoming one of its most outstanding dancers. Throughout his career, he also played a key role as a teacher and mentor to new generations of artists. Through his work as a performer, choreographer and storyteller, Atanásio Cosme Nhussi made dance a space for memory, identity and resistance, contributing decisively to the promotion of Mozambique’s cultural traditions.

Nuno Silas

Nuno Silas é diretor artístico, investigador e artista cuja prática se desenvolve entre a curadoria, investigação e historiografia de coleções museológicas. Atualmente, colabora no MAAT – Museu de Arte, Arquitetura e Tecnologia, em Lisboa, onde desenvolve investigação e estudo da coleção de arte.

É doutorando em História e Filosofia da Ciência, com especialização em Museologia, no Instituto de História Contemporânea (IHC – NOVA FCSH) – Universidade de Évora.

Colaborou com instituições de renome, tais como o Humboldt Forum, Iwalewahaus Bayreuth, Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) em Berlim, EGEAC, CCFMA e Goethe Maputo.

É licenciado pela Escola Superior de Artes e Design (Instituto Politécnico de Leiria, Caldas da Rainha) e frequentou o mestrado em African Verbal and Visual Arts: Languages, Literatures, Media and Art na Universidade de Bayreuth, colaborou com projetos de investigação financiados pela DFG, tais como “‘Black Atlantic Revisited’ – African and South American UNESCO – World Heritage Sites and ‘Shadowed Spaces’ of Performative Memory” e “Multiple Artworks- Multiple Indian Ocean”.

Foi diretor artístico do projeto “Black Skin, White Masks: The Black Body in Presence” nas Galerias Municipais (EGEAC, Lisboa) e curador do projeto expositivo Olhares Críticos sobre no Arquivo Colonial : Sombras e Memórias.

Nuno Silas is an artistic director, researcher, and artist whose practice spans the curation, research, and historiography of museum collections. He currently collaborates with MAAT (Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology) in Lisbon, where he conducts research and studies the art collection.

He is a PhD candidate in the History and Philosophy of Science, specializing in Museology, at the Institute of Contemporary History (IHC – NOVA FCSH) / University of Évora.

He has collaborated with renowned institutions such as the Humboldt Forum, Iwalewahaus Bayreuth, and Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) in Berlin, as well as EGEAC, CCFMA, and Goethe Maputo.

He holds a degree from the School of Arts and Design (Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, Caldas da Rainha) and pursued a master’s degree in African Verbal and Visual Arts: Languages, Literatures, Media and Art at the University of Bayreuth. He has also collaborated on DFG-funded research projects, such as “‘Black Atlantic Revisited’ – African and South American UNESCO – World Heritage Sites and ‘Shadowed Spaces’ of Performative Memory” and “Multiple Artworks – Multiple Indian Ocean.”

He served as artistic director for the project “Black Skin, White Masks: The Black Body in Presence” at the Municipal Galleries (EGEAC, Lisbon) and curated the exhibition project Olhares Críticos sobre o Arquivo Colonial: Sombras e Memórias (Critical Perspectives on the Colonial Archive: Shadows and Memories).
